No Riya Mac Client?

How I just wasted 5 minutes:

  1. Saw that Riya Beta is now open to everyone.

  2. Went to the Riya site and signed up.

  3. Was told that I needed Windows XP.

  4. Realized that it wasn’t open to me.

  5. Closed browser window.

Seriously, what new web company doesn’t launch with Macintosh compatibility in mind. How hard is it to write an uploader? What would it take? Two, maybe three days of a developer’s time?

Or better yet, just implement a clone of the Flickr API and be done with it.

Unless the uploader is doing a bunch of preprocessing of the photos on the desktop beforehand, I can’t really see any good reason for not offering a Mac client.

(three months later) that must be some rather unportable C code...
  • Kurt,

Actually our uploader does do a lot of pre-processing of the photos we do face detection on the client (finding where the face is in the photograph) and face recognition (who the face belongs to) on the server. Face detection takes as much as 10 - 20 seconds a photo and is highly optimized C code which we have to still port to the mac.

Net, net it is coming. I actually use a mac as my main machine so you can bet I'm pushing for it.

    I know...I know...believe me, Kurt, I'm a Mac user myself...

Man...keep blogging this. I'm hoping the Mac uploader (and maybe you know of someone other than Frasier Spears - who did the iPhoto plugin...he's busy...who can help us out?) will be done sooner than later.

I totally get your frustration. Soon? ;)
